He said their relationship consisted of "a couple of casual meetings with him, and then I said: 'Look, I'd like to be your friend and I'd like to help you out.' " Although Frank said their relationship was short-lived, he said his friendship for Gobie was not. "We never spent the night in my apartment," Frank said. "I would not have had a sexual relationship with someone who was working for me," Frank said. Frank disputed the newspaper's description of Gobie as his lover. The congressman agreed with The Times account that he initially paid Gobie for sex but said that relationship terminated "a month or two" later when Gobie agreed to work for him. But Frank said he hoped that Gobie's prostitution would "diminish" as he underwent therapy ordered by an Alexandria judge after he was convicted of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Frank said he knew Gobie was still a prostitute when he hired him as a personal aide and that he did not expect him to "go cold turkey" and stop the practice immediately. That announcement apparently was made about the same time Frank fired Gobie, an action the lawmaker took after his landlord complained a second time about activities in the congressman's apartment while he was out of town. The congressman conceded that the disclosures may hurt him politically and said that his fractious relationship with Gobie was a key factor in his decision to state publicly in the spring of 1987 that he is gay. Gobie told the Times that Frank paid him $80 for their first sexual encounter in his 8th Street SE apartment after the congressman answered his want ad in a gay newspaper. At the news conference in his district and in interviews yesterday, Frank identified the former aide as Steve Gobie, 32, a man who had been convicted of three felonies, including oral sodomy and possession of cocaine, in Alexandria Circuit Court in 1982. Republicans in Massachusetts called for Frank's resignation, citing what they termed his poor judgment Democrats said the issue could threaten the 49-year-old congressman's career. His statement, at a news conference in the Boston suburb of Newton, followed publication of reports in The Washington Times that detailed the former aide's relationship with the congressman and the principal of the Chevy Chase Elementary School in Montgomery County. I lost money, and I was embarrassed," Frank said. But Frank said he was instead "victimized." "I was a loser. ," said Frank, likening himself to the fabled English linguistic scientist in George Bernard Shaw's "Pygmalion" who attempts to transform a cockney waif into a member of English society. It was an effort that the five-term lawmaker said was fueled by his desire to prove himself a liberal who cared about a "particular individual" as much as "humanity in general." "I thought I was Henry Higgins. ![]() Frank, who is homosexual, said he had employed the man out of his personal funds in the hope that he could lead him away from prostitution and to a better life. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), one of the House's leading liberals, said yesterday he had privately hired a male prostitute with a criminal record as a personal aide, housekeeper, and driver and fired him about 18 months later in mid-1987 after learning that the man had used his Capitol Hill apartment for prostitution. ![]()
